Square Enix seems to have learned its lesson when it comes to shiny new tech – just with a significant entry lag. Earlier this year, Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu spoke passionately about generative artificial intelligence, which strongly echoed the company’s love affair with equally pointless NFTs.
In a January newsletter, he stated, «I believe generative AI has the potential not only to reshape what we create, but also to fundamentally change the processes by which we create,» and that the company would be «aggressive in the application of AI». and other advanced technologies for both content development and our publishing functions.»
As reported by michsuzu on Twitter (and later revealed, then translated by Automaton), in a June 21 call to investors, Kiryu seems to believe that, perhaps, being hyper-aggressive about applying a technology controversial new is not the best. ideas:
«AI itself has tremendous potential. However, there are also many risks involved.» The risks mentioned are not only subject to the court of public opinion – AI-generating technology has a habit of information hallucinations. For example, it can completely fabricate a recipe, invent a case study in a lawsuit, or create a coding solution that doesn’t exist in programming. «We have introduced a flow where AI-related tools are used domestically only after being properly vetted,» Kiryu added.
Looking at the wider industry, most current developers aren’t even super enthusiastic about its inclusion, outside of its limitation to boring jobs, basically, the scope of the technology is there, but limited and often decided by the people who do actually the stuff instead of runaway executives who think it can add a billion total dives and up the thrills by 500%.
Kiryu seems to have actually digested these criticisms properly, however, stating that the company would only apply generative AI to «fields unrelated to creativity» — better late than never, as they say. He notes that, in particular, the use of generative AI in creative fields is «extremely delicate» and that he would be cautious.
Overall, an equally refreshing response from Kiryu – personally, I’d rather have avoided Square Enix’s confusing PR blunder with Foamstars (and whatever the hell Symbiogenesis is), but it’s good to see the president of a behemoth like Square Enix step outside the realm of deep learning hipism, even if it’s just for a second.
